Year 5
This year the Year 5 teachers are Mrs Winder and Mrs Green and we are supported by Miss Wilks and student teacher Miss Faulkner. We are looking forward to a fun-filled and informative Summer term together.
During the Summer term, Year 5 will be start with a narrative unit, where we will look at the book The Malamander. During this unit we will look at the characters of Herbert Lemon and Violet Parma as well as the setting in which the novel takes place. We will write our own part of the story using our imaginations to extend the plot. We will also look at direct speech in order to characterise speech within our own plot.
Our second topic of the term will have a science focus and will look at materials. We will start by looking at dissolving and move on to separation techniques. We will find out about reversible changes and will look at the work of famous scientist Spencer Silver.
After half term, our first topic will have a historical focus where we explore the Early Islamic Civilisation. We will start off with a workshop where we will get to find out all about the House of Wisdom before looking at the question - Where would you rather live in AD900 – Baghdad or Britain?
Our final topic of the year is another Science unit where we will be looking at life cycles. We will compare the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds. We also look at reproduction in some plants and animals as well as exploring the changes that happen to humans as they develop in to old age.
PE will has moved to alternate Thursday afternoons and swimming is now on alternate Tuesday afternoons. Please make sure that your child has the correct kit as per the uniform policy.
Many thanks,
Year 5 team
