Year 5
During the Spring term, Year 5 will be start by looking at the historical topic of The Anglo-Saxons. During this topic, we will explore artefacts whilst formulating questions about what they have been used for and by whom. We will look at the reasons why the Anglo-Saxons decided to come to Britain and how we know about where they settled. We will look at the life of an Anglo-Saxon, how their religion changed whilst they were here and will find out whether King Alfred the Great really was great! During this topic we will take a trip to The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery to look at the world famous Staffordshire Hoard and to take part in an Anglo-Saxon workshop.
Our second topic of the term has a scientific focus and will look at Earth and Space. Our pupils will learn all about the different planets of the Solar System, how we have night and day, how seasons occur and the different phases of the moon. We will secure our learning with a visit to Leicester Space Museum where we will watch an amazing display of our solar system in their fantastic auditorium and we will also get the chance to walk to the very top of an actual space rocket!
After half term, our first topic will have a narrative focus and will be based on Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Throughout this topic, we will be focussing on the amazing settings in the book, writing our own character descriptions and will be writing a newspaper report about the death of the king!
Our final topic of the Spring term will again have a geographical focus. We will start by looking at the formation of volcanoes where we will look at the different parts of the volcano and how earthquakes happen.
Our maths curriculum will cover fractions, decimals and percentages.
PE will remain on Wednesday afternoons and will alternate between PE and Swimming. Please make sure that your child has the correct kit as per the uniform policy.
Many thanks,
Year 5 team
