Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 Class Page!

This year the Year 5 teachers are Mrs Winder, supported by Miss Wilks and Mrs Johnston, supported by Miss Hall. We are looking forward to a fun-filled and informative year together.

During the Autumn term, Year 5 will be start by looking at the geographical topic of coasts. We will start by looking at the common features of a coastline, especially those found within the UK before our immersion day where we will take a walk along a coastline in Anglesey and will get to see most of the features we have been learning about. Following this, we will further explore how a cliff becomes a stump and will complete a piece of information writing explaining this process. During poetry and art week, we will refer back to this learning when creating our own versions of Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’.

Our second topic of the term has a scientific focus and will look at forces. With Sir Isaac Newton as our famous scientist, we will look at how gravity was discovered as well as looking at other forces that act upon us in daily life such as air resistance, friction, water resistance and the use of gears, levers and pulleys. This topic will culminate with us designing our own zip-lines utilising most of the forces we have looked at.

After October half term, our first topic will have a narrative focus and will be based on the novel The Malamander by Thomas Taylor. Throughout this topic, we will be focussing on the amazing characters in the book and will be writing our own character descriptions. We will also look at adding speech to one of the main parts of the text before writing our own adapted versions of part of the text.

Our final topic of the Autumn term will again have a scientific focus. We will be studying materials and their properties. This will involve comparing and grouping everyday materials before completing an investigation utilising all of our new knowledge. During our science topics we will be learning to write in a scientific way, this will be continued throughout the year.

Our maths curriculum will cover place value, addition, subtractions, multiplication, division, perimeter and area.

PE will be on Wednesdays and will alternate between PE and swimming. After half term our PE focus is dance with Miss Finch.

Many thanks,

Year 5 team
