Year 2
Welcome to Year Two
A very warm welcome to Year 2 (2024-2024).
Miss Shields and Mrs Pollard are the Year 2 teachers with Miss Mannion and Mrs Shufflebotham supporting.
In Year 2, we follow the National Curriculum and our mornings consist of Phonics, Maths and Curriculum learning. We link all our learning to a range of exciting topics which engage the children and immerse them in purposeful learning.
This term, we will begin with our Geography topic, ‘Let’s celebrate Great Britain’. During this topic we will be recapping knowledge of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and will also name the capital cities. Children will explore a range of different maps including aerial views, maps with symbols, atlases and online interactive maps. During these activities, they will identify human and physical features and discuss some of the main features of the United Kingdom. They will complete field work locally, starting with the school grounds and then moving onto a wider range as they visit Westport Lake. Children will end the unit by applying all their knowledge to write a non-chronological report about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom.
During the second half of the term, we will be focusing on our Science topic ‘Living things and their habitats.’ Children will look at a range of different animals and use Scientific inquiry skills to identify the habitats to which they are suited. During the topic, we will also look at animals and their food sources. This will involve sorting and classifying different animals into food chains.
In Maths, we will be furthering our place value to 100 knowledge. During this unit children will be partitioning numbers and discussing how numbers can be represented. The children will be using lots of apparatus and place value cards to help them develop their knowledge. They will be encouraged to read and represent numbers and extend this learning by answering questions about their reasoning skills. We will continue with the principle of concrete, pictorial and then abstract lessons.
In Phonics, we will continue to use Super Sonic Phonic Friends scheme to support our daily lessons. The children will be screened at the beginning of the term to ensure they remain in the correct groups. Reading at home and using the Reading Eggs app will help to develop the children’s phonics development (if you need your child’s login for this, please contact your class teacher).
PE will take place on a Monday. Please send your child into school in their full, correct PE kit, making sure they have a jumper or cardigan to keep them warm as some lessons will be outside. All earrings must be removed.
Please send your child into school every day with a labelled water bottle and please ensure that every item of clothing is clearly named.
The Year 2 staff are all very excited to begin this learning journey with the children and I am sure that we will have lots of amazing achievements during the year.
Thank you for your continued support.
