Year 2
Welcome to Year Two
It has been a wonderful half term of learning and children have shown their skills throughout the different topics explored so far.
During the next half term, Year 2 will continue to follow the National Curriculum as our mornings consist of Phonics, Maths and Curriculum learning. We link all our learning to a range of exciting topics which engage and build upon prior learning. This is a very important part our learning and we revisit prior learning on a regular basis. Children are encouraged to revisit their learning and use it as a platform for new topics and sessions.
This half term, we will begin with our Narrative topic. During this topic, children will be reading a new text called ‘Troll by Julia Donaldson’. Children will begin this unit by becoming familiar with the text and the characters represented. They will have the opportunity to sequence the main events, role play, explore characters and discuss retrieving information from the text. Once children have explored the new text, they will begin to look at the main characters. This exploration will support children with writing a character description. They will be generating adjectives to describe the characters and will be encouraged to up level their word choices during vocabulary sessions.
During the second half of the term, we will be focusing on our Science topic ‘Materials and their Properties’. Children will look at a range of different materials and will build upon their Year 1 learning by describing materials and their use within everyday items. They will then begin to look further at properties of materials as they explore how the shapes of solid objects made from the same materials can be changed.
In Maths, we will be revisiting our place value knowledge and applying this to addition and subtraction of larger numbers. During this unit, children will be looking at methods to add 2 two-digit numbers using column addition strategies. They will then move onto column subtraction strategies by discussing how numbers can be represented. The children will be using lots of apparatus including place value cards and base ten representations to help them develop their knowledge. They will be encouraged to read and represent numbers and extend this learning by answering questions about their reasoning skills. We will continue with the principle of concrete, pictorial and then abstract lessons.
In Phonics, we will continue to use Super Sonic Phonic Friends scheme to support our daily lessons. The children have now been placed into learning groups and staff will give you some information about next steps each week.
PE will take place on a Thursday. We will be looking at different ways to move and control our bodies during Gymnastics. Please send your child into school in their full, correct PE kit. All earrings must be removed.
Please send your child into school every day with a labelled water bottle and ensure that every item of clothing is clearly named.
The Year 2 staff are all very excited to continue this learning journey with the children and I am sure that we will have lots of amazing achievements during this next half term.
Thank you for your continued support.
