Nursery

Welcome to Nursery

Mrs Norris is the nursery teacher and is assisted by Mrs Lake, Mrs Mashanga and Mrs Hodson-Ford.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our wonderful children to Nursery. It will be an absolute pleasure to be part of their learning journey and we cannot wait to see each child flourish.

In Nursery, we learn alongside the Development Matters National Curriculum for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Throughout all of our work, the staff in Nursery will be assessing the children against the objectives outlined within this document and also use it to ensure that all individual needs are being met.

In Nursery, children will have daily Phonics (taught through Supersonic Phonic Friends) and Maths session in the morning and Topic sessions during the afternoon. Children are introduced to their new learning challenges in small groups. This is then further developed through child-initiated and facilitated learning that takes place throughout the day. Learning is promoted in both the indoor and outdoor environment.

During the autumn term, our first topic will be ‘Elmer’. We will be reading the story of Elmer the elephant and will explore colour mixing and making patterns. The second topic is ‘All about me’. We will be learning about families, drawing upon the individual families of our nursery children and remembering that all families are not the same.

During our Phonics sessions children will be starting in Basic 1 of Supersonic Phonic Friends. During the first stage of Basic 1 they will be focusing on environmental sounds.

In Maths children will be exploring patterns within the environment. Children will have the opportunity to discuss the patterns that they see around them and also create their own patterns. They will also be learning how to sort by colour and objects.

The children will be learning about St Mary’s school value ‘Love’. They will learn what love is, why it is important and who they love. They will complete a variety of activities to promote their understanding of love.

At St Mary’s outdoor learning in very important to us, nursery promote this by taking part in ‘Dirt day Thursday’. Every Thursday afternoon children spend time learning in the outdoor environment. They are given opportunities to explore, discover and take risks.

Please ensure the children bring to school appropriate clothing such as a puddle suit (see our uniform requirements for more information) jogging bottoms and wellies. If you need further information regarding clothing please contact a member of the Nursery team.

We look forward to a fun filled half term!

Thank you,

Nursery Team
