Year 2

Welcome to our Summer Term in Year Two!

What a brilliant term of learning we have had! Children have been so enthusiastic about the topics explored so far and we can’t wait to begin our new topics during the Summer Term.

Our first topic is History, we will be studying Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. During this topic we will be learning about these two significant figures and understanding the similarities and differences of their life and experiences. Children will use sequencing and hot seating opportunities to become familiar with Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale.

Our next topic is Narrative and we will be reading and learning all about the story The Twits by Roald Dahl. We will be exploring the text and retelling key events from the story. We will also take part in roleplay and drama activities, writing a character description and creating an alternative ending. We will then have a poetry week where there will be an art focus for the children. After this, we will be looking at plants in our science topic, where we will be observing and describing how seeds and bulbs grow in mature plants. We will also be thinking about what plants need to grow and stay healthy.

For our last topic, we will be looking at history and conducting a local heritage study. This will be focused on the importance of canals, with opportunities for sequencing and finding evidence activities.

During our computing sessions we will be looking at ‘Digital Music'. Children will explore how music can make them think and feel. They will make patterns and use those patterns to make music with both percussion instruments and digital tools. They will also create different rhythms and tunes, using the movement of animals for inspiration

In Maths, we will be learning about position and direction, statistics and money. We will continue to recap our place value knowledge, addition and subtraction skills using problem solving scenarios.

PE

PE will take place on a Monday. Reminders about which days you need PE kit will be posted on Dojo.  During our sessions children will be developing their sending and receiving skills including throwing, catching, rolling, kicking, tracking and stopping a ball. Please make sure that your child comes into school wearing the correct PE kit. Long hair needs to be tied back. All earrings need to be removed before school.

Please send your child into school every day with a labelled water bottle and ensure that every item of clothing is clearly named.

The Year 2 staff are all very excited to continue this learning journey with the children and I am sure that we will have lots of amazing achievements during this next half term.

Thank you for your continued support.
