Year 2

Welcome to Year Two

Welcome back to Year 2 – Spring 2

Mrs Cooke, Miss Rowe and Miss Sotero are the Year 2 class teachers, supported by Mrs Williamson and Mrs Wilcox.

In Year 2, we follow the National Curriculum. Our mornings include Phonics, Maths and Curriculum learning. We link our learning to a range of exciting topics that engage the children and immerse them in purposeful, meaningful experiences.

Poetry and Art Week

This term will begin with a week focused on Poetry and Art. We will explore expressive art and create our own pieces inspired by the artists Marela Zacarias and Charlie French. The children will also learn the poem Scissors by Allan Ahlberg. We are very much looking forward to sharing our Poetry and Art work with you at our showcase event.

Geography Topic

What is life like for a child in Pakistan?

During the second half of the half-term, we will begin our Geography topic, What is life like for a child in Pakistan?

In this unit, the children will:

  • Name the seven continents and the five oceans of the world
  • Explore a range of maps, including aerial views, symbol maps, atlases and online interactive maps
  • Identify similarities and differences in human and physical geography between the UK and Pakistan
  • Locate and name hot and cold areas of the world using atlases and globes
  • Develop and use appropriate geographical vocabulary

The children will also complete local fieldwork, beginning in the school grounds before exploring the wider local area. They will finish the unit by applying their knowledge to write a non-chronological report about Pakistan.

Maths

In Maths, the children will focus on Multiplication and Division. They will become secure with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and the related division facts. They will also use arrays to deepen their understanding of multiplication.

After this, we will move on to mass, capacity and temperature. The children will learn to measure using grams, kilograms, millilitres, litres and degrees Celsius. They will compare and order different amounts and develop confidence in using measurement vocabulary.

Phonics

We will continue to use the Super Sonic Phonic Friends scheme to support our daily phonics lessons. The children will be assessed at the beginning of the half-term to ensure they are in the correct groups.

Regular reading at home and using the Reading Eggs app will greatly support your child’s phonics development. If you need your child’s login details, please contact your class teacher.

PE

PE will take place on Thursdays. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full and correct PE kit. As some lessons will take place outdoors, children should bring a jumper or cardigan to keep warm. All earrings must be removed.

Daily Reminders

  • Please send your child to school each day with a labelled water bottle.
  • Ensure all clothing and personal items are clearly named.

The Year 2 team is very excited to continue this learning journey with the children and looks forward to a wonderful half-term ahead.

Thank you for your continued support.
