Year 2

Welcome to Year Two

Mrs Cooke, Miss Rowe and Miss Sotero are the Year 2 class teachers, supported by Mrs Williamson and Mrs Wilcox.

In Year 2, we follow the National Curriculum. Our mornings include Phonics, Maths and Curriculum learning. We link our learning to a range of exciting topics that engage the children and immerse them in purposeful, meaningful experiences.

Summer Term Learning Overview – Year 2

We are looking forward to an exciting and engaging summer term in Year 2! Below is an overview of what the children will be learning across the curriculum.

Curriculum:

This term, we will be exploring the wonderful work of Roald Dahl, focusing on The Twits. The children will read and discuss the story, exploring its characters and themes in depth. They will write a detailed character description using rich vocabulary and descriptive language and will also create their own alternative ending to the story, developing both their creativity and storytelling skills.

Science (Animals Including Humans):

In Science, our topic is Animals Including Humans. The children will learn about the basic needs of humans for survival and good health. They will take part in practical investigations, including measuring and comparing hand spans and exploring how exercise affects the body, such as changes in heart rate and breathing. The children will also learn about the importance of keeping healthy through a balanced diet, regular exercise and good hygiene.

Maths:

In Maths, we will be focusing on fractions, where children will learn how to find fractions of shapes, amounts and numbers. They will also develop their understanding of time, including telling the time and understanding duration. The children will have weekly times table checks every Thursday.

Phonics:

We will continue to use the Super Sonic Phonic Friends scheme to support our daily phonics lessons. The children will be assessed at the beginning of the half-term to ensure they are in the correct groups. Regular reading at home and using the Reading Eggs app will greatly support your child’s phonics development. If you need your child’s login details, please contact your class teacher.

PE:

PE will take place on Mondays. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full and correct PE kit. As some lessons will take place outdoors, children should bring a jumper or cardigan to keep warm. All earrings must be removed.

Daily Reminders:

  • Please send your child to school each day with a labelled water bottle.
  • Ensure all clothing and personal items are clearly named.

The Year 2 team is very excited to continue this learning journey with the children and looks forward to a wonderful half-term ahead.

Thank you for your continued support,

Year 2 Team
