Nursery
Welcome to Autumn 2 in Nursery
Miss Reid and Mrs Lazenby are the nursery teachers and are assisted by Mrs Lake, Mrs Mashanga, Mrs Hodson-Ford and Miss Kat who the classes wonderful Learning Support Assistants.
This half term in Nursery the children will continue with daily Phonics (taught through Supersonic Phonic Friends) and Maths session in the morning and Topic sessions during the afternoon. Children are introduced to their new learning challenges in small groups. This is then further developed through child-initiated and facilitated learning that takes place throughout the day. Learning is promoted in both the indoor and outdoor environment.
During his half term our first topic will be ‘My Community’. We will be reading the stories ‘At School’ and ‘All are Welcome’. The children will learn about what a community is and what it means to be a part of a community. They will enjoy going on local walks in the community and learn to draw themselves and others focusing on features such as arms, legs, eyes and nose. The second topic is ‘Looking after our school’. We will be learning about how we can look after our school environment by recycling and exploring different materials such as plastic, cardboard, paper and tin. The children will explore textures of different materials and use these to make collages. During this Topic the children will read stories such as ‘What a waste’ and ‘Why should I Recycle’.
During our Phonics sessions children will continue Basic 1 of Supersonic Phonic Friends. The children will be focusing on instrumental sounds this half term.
In Maths children will be exploring numbers. The children will be learning to count in ones using different activities such as counting rhymes and stories. The children will also be introduced to subitising, where they will learn the value of a number and what this looks like and how it can be represented.
The children will be learning about St Mary’s school value ‘Pride’. They will learn what Pride is, why it is important and how they can show Pride. They will complete a variety of activities to promote their understanding of Pride.
We will continue our outdoor learning afternoons ‘Dirt day Thursday’. Every Thursday afternoon the children spend time learning in the outdoor environment. They are given opportunities to explore, discover and take risks. Autumn is an amazing time to explore outdoors as it has so many opportunities and changes that the children can see and experience.
Please ensure that children continue to bring to school appropriate clothing such as a puddle suit (see our uniform requirements for more information) jogging bottoms and wellies. If you need further information regarding clothing please contact a member of the Nursery team.
We look forward to another fun filled half term!
Thank you,
Nursery Team
