Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 Class Page!

During the Summer term, Year 5 will be start by looking at the historical topic of The Ancient Islamic Civilisation. The children will start with an immersion day where they will take part in workshops, look at different artefacts and will end with a performance delivered to other children in school. Following this, we will further explore artefacts whilst formulating questions about what they have been used for and by whom. We will look at the capital city of Baghdad and the House of Wisdom, education and the lasting impact that this civilisation has had on the modern world. We will finish our topic by writing a persuasive piece of text to convince people to come and live in Baghdad. As a part of this topic we will also be using our Design and Technology skills when making vegetable patties.

Our second topic of the term has a geographical focus and will look at volcanoes and earthquakes. During this topic, we will further our learning on tectonic plates, which the children started in Year 4, when looking at how volcanoes are formed. We will look inside a volcano using our VR headsets and will explore locations of volcanoes using Google Maps. Throughout this topic we will be thinking about the question – Should people be allowed to live near a volcano? Alongside learning about volcanoes and earthquakes, during this time we will be improving our geography field skills by looking at the 8 points of a compass, grid references and OS maps.

After May half term, our first topic will have a narrative focus and will be based on the novel The Malamander by Thomas Taylor. Throughout this topic, we will be focussing on the amazing characters in the book and will be writing our own character descriptions. We will also look at adding speech to one of the main parts of the text before writing our own adapted versions of part of the text.

Our final topic of the Summer term will again have a local history focus which is yet to be confirmed.

Our maths curriculum will cover measurements, shape, position, direction and statistics. We will also carry on with our time work which has been running throughout the year.

PE will be on Friday afternoons unless otherwise instructed and children will be in their PPA classes. This term we will start with an athletics focus and will move on to cricket after half term. Please make sure that your child has the correct kit as per the uniform policy.

Many thanks,

Year 5 team
