Nursery

Welcome to Nursery!

Mrs Norris is the nursery teacher and is assisted by Mrs Meakin and Mrs Lake who are our amazing Early Years Practitioners and Mrs Mashanga who is a fantastic Learning Support Assistants.

We would like to welcome you back after the Easter break.

In Nursery, we learn alongside the Development Matters. Throughout all of our work, the staff in Nursery will be assessing the children against the objectives outlined within this document and also use it to ensure that all individual needs are being met.

In Nursery, children will have daily Phonics (taught through Supersonic Phonic Friends) and Maths session in the morning and Topic sessions during the afternoon. Children are introduced to their new learning challenges in small groups. This is then further developed through child-initiated and facilitated learning that takes place throughout the day. Learning is promoted in both the indoor and outdoor environment.

During this term our topic is ‘I wonder who lives in a castle?’ and ‘I wonder if countries are different’ The children will be learning about the royal family and the children will be able to name 2 and order 3 royals by the end. In the second part of the term they will be learning about another country. The children will understand the similarities and differences about living in another country and the different traditions and celebrations.

During our Phonics sessions children will be continuing in Firm Foundations of Supersonic Phonic Friends. During this stage they will be focusing on oral blending and segmenting.

In maths the children will be exploring numeral 5. Children will have the opportunity to explore this number by touch counting, selecting 5 objects from a large group, recognising the numerals, matching the numerals to quantity, subitising, writing and recording, using a tally chart.

The children will be learning about St Mary’s school value ‘respect’ and ‘endeavour’. They will learn what respect and endeavour are and why they are important. They will complete a variety of activities to promote their understanding of respect and endeavour.

At St Mary’s outdoor learning in very important to us, nursery promote this by taking part in ‘Dirt Day Thursday’. Every Thursday afternoon children spend time learning in the outdoor environment. They are given opportunities to explore, discover and take risks.

Please ensure the children bring to school appropriate clothing such as a puddle suit (see our uniform requirements for more information) jogging bottoms and wellies/walking boots. If you need further information regarding clothing please contact a member of the Nursery team.

We look forward to a fun filled half term!
