Welcome to Nursery's class page 

Miss Reid is the Nursery Teacher and is supported by Mrs Lake, Mrs Mashanga, Mrs Hodson-Ford and Miss Kat.

We would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome all of our wonderful children to Nursery. It will be an absolute pleasure to be part of their learning journey and development, and we are excited to see each child grow and flourish.

In Nursery, we follow the Development Matters framework within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Throughout all of our work, the Nursery team will assess the children against the objectives outlined in this document to ensure that all individual needs are met and that every child is supported to reach their full potential.

Each day, children will take part in Phonics sessions (taught through Supersonic Phonic Friends) and Maths (taught through White Rose Maths) in the morning, followed by Topic sessions in the afternoon. New learning is introduced in small groups and is then developed further through child-initiated and adult-facilitated activities throughout the day. Learning takes place both indoors and outdoors to provide a rich and engaging environment.

For the Autumn term, our topic is “I wonder who is in my family.” We will explore different types of families, using the children’s own experiences while recognising and celebrating that all families are unique.

During Phonics, children will begin at Basic 1 in Supersonic Phonic Friends, where they will initially focus on identifying and exploring environmental sounds.

In Maths, children will explore concepts such as more than, fewer than and the same, as well as building with shapes and objects, recognising patterns, and developing their understanding of number names.

Children will also learn about St Mary’s school value of Love. They will explore what love means, why it is important, and who they love, through a range of meaningful activities.

Outdoor learning is a key part of life at St Mary’s. In Nursery, this is promoted through ‘Dirt Day Thursday,’ where children spend time learning in the outdoor environment. This provides opportunities to explore, discover and take appropriate risks in a safe and supportive setting.

Please ensure that children come to school with appropriate clothing, including a puddle suit (please refer to our uniform requirements), jogging bottoms, and wellington boots or walking boots. If you require any further information regarding suitable clothing, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Nursery team.
